Daily Inspiration: Meet Midge Munster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Midge Munster.

Hi Midge, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been an “old soul”. I was an only child raised by older parents who schooled me in good music and classic films. I was a bit of a hippie kid. I loved The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix and wanted my room to be decorated with lava lamps and VW buses.

When I was in high school, I found a love of 1950s and 60s fashion through doing theatre which I feel was the real jumping-off point for the person that I became. I struggled a lot with body image and just being my authentic self growing up. When I started dressing in vintage-inspired fashion (and later spooky vintage fashion), I started to find that other people really responded to the confidence I found through showing up as the truest version of myself.

The more I leaned into my weird interests and strange fashion choices, the more I felt like my world opened up and more and more incredible people came into my sphere. Through following my joy, I now have a career I love that gives me a platform to inspire others, and that is pretty freakin’ cool.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Striking out on your own is never a smooth road. Even though I was really excited when I made the decision to be a content creator and entrepreneur full time, I was terrified. But I had spent years working for other people, not really finding the joy I knew was possible for myself in this life.

I knew there had to be something better for me out there where I wasn’t just surviving. I knew I could thrive if I trusted myself. Of course, this job absolutely has its challenges. It’s definitely hard putting yourself out on the internet for a living. Everyone has an opinion about you, especially as a plus-size woman who is unafraid to take up space. Some days it’s definitely hard not to feel like an imposter or like I don’t deserve the platform that I have.

But almost a year post quitting my day job, I am so thankful that I trusted myself to do this. I have found my community, and it makes me so happy to be able to help others follow their joy and be true to themselves.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I tell others what I do, I always start by describing myself as a haunted housewife. I know that sounds absolutely ridiculous, but hey, I AM sort of ridiculous. At a base level, my content is about spooky stuff and home decor and vintage style, but more than that, it is about what can happen when you channel your energy into creating a life you love and celebrate the things that make you wonderfully weird!

I have always had a deep love of all things vintage and spooky, but I didn’t really know what I could do with those interests to make any sort of career. About five years ago, I started a YouTube channel under the name Adventures in Vintage. At the time I was trying really to fit the “pinup” mold that I was seeing everywhere within the vintage community. Unfortunately, that led to me being really unhappy because I wasn’t being true to myself.

In March of 2020, I saw a trend going around where creators were doing “Quarantine-oween” to bring some joy during the first lockdown and I thought “Hey, I love Halloween. Why not?” I made a Halloween-inspired video in March and had the most fun I had making content maybe ever. I realized at that moment that I needed to let my freak flag fly and create the type of content that I wanted to see. Out of that, Midge Munster was born. My channel blew up shortly after.

In the last year, I have had the pleasure of working with other amazing creators, starting my podcast Ghouls Night In with my amazing co-ghost Penny Snark. I had the honor of being flown out to New Jersey to open the Spirit Halloween flagship store last year. In July 2021, I was able to quit my job to run my channel full time, and it has been the biggest blessing I could ever ask for.

Any big plans?
I have big plans baby, BIG PLANS!

I’m currently writing a book that I am incredibly excited about. My intent is for it to be sort of a satire of those old guides on how to be a “perfect housewife” from the 1950s, but with a spooky twist of course.

I’ll also be out at Midsummer Scream in California this July, so if you are planning on being there let me know! I’d love to say hi!
